In Focus: Outstanding Landscape Architect of the Year

The Professional Regulation Commissions held its annual Awards Night, "PRC @45," last 21 June 2018 at the Fiesta Pavilion, Manila Hotel, in recognition for the excellence of the country's professionals. It is where L.Arch. Elizabeth Hautea-Espino has received the 2018 Outstanding Professional of the Year in Landscape Architecture Award.

L.Arch. Elizabeth Hautea-Espino earned a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, where she also became a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture for five years.


She has dedicated most of her career in government service, having been employed in various agencies and worked with government offices as a consultant. From 19870 to 2007, she held a position as a Senior Planning Officer and later promoted as a Director II in the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and, she was a part of the Pasig River Commission, as a permanent representative. In January 2014, she was selected as the Executive Director of the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) – marking her as the first Landscape Architect to be appointed in the position. While under these agencies, she helped the landscape architecture profession be recognized as an essential component for the improvement of metro areas, and emphasized the need to hire landscape architects for its roadside and open spaces projects.


One of her contributions in the realm of publication is a DENR-FASPO sponsored guide entitled "Landscape Guidelines for Major Thoroughfares" which serves as a guiding principle for LGUs and students on streetscape and planting at thoroughfares.

Before becoming a government figure and being recognized as an urban specialist, she was first an apprentice for three years at the Idelfonso Santos Jr. & Associates from 1975 to 1978, and worked for two years as a Landscape Architect at the F.T. Mañosa & Associates from 1978 to 1980.


She had greatly contributed in the field of Landscape Architecture, not only for her exemplary service in the profession, but, as well as her incomparable involvement in the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (PALA). In the early 2000's, she has held positions as a PALA Treasurer, PALA Board Member, and, became the President of the organization in the year 2013. Having been a member of the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects since 1985, her relentless dedication to the organization is a testament of her outstanding career.
